Ensure your hazard lights are visible to passing traffic.
Never change a tire on an incline or soft shoulder. Place wheel chocks on the wheels diagonally opposite the flat tire to prevent any rolling.

Loosen the lug nuts half a turn BEFORE raising the vehicle.
Use your body weight on the wrench if nuts are stiff.
Turn each lug nut counter-clockwise with your tire iron while ground friction keeps the wheel in place. Do not remove them completely yet.
